Quinta Do Vallado

Established in 1716, Quinta do Vallado is one of the oldest and most famous estates in the Douro Valley. Once the property of legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, it’s still in the possession of her descendants Francisco and João Ferreira.

For almost 200 years, Quinta do Vallado produced only port wines, shipped by the Ferreira Port House (owned by the Ferreira family until late 80s), but are now also a formidable producer of dry white, rosé and red wine.

They own 70ha of vineyards in the Lower Corgo and another 30ha of organic vineyards at Quinta do Orgal in Douro Superior. The vines in the Lower Corgo are planted on south and west facing slopes; the schistslate soil is excellent for optimum ripening of the grapes, taking advantage of the Mediterranean climate. There are more than 40 varieties planted, with a focus on Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Touriga Franca. At Quinta do Orgal, the vineyards are mostly planted to Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Sousao.

Hand picked and gently handled, grapes used for port wine production are then foot trodden in granite lagares, as well as a small percentage of the grapes used for dry wine. Quinta do Vallado have been producing top quality, single-estate ports and dry wines under their own brand since the early 90s, and have achieved worldwide recognition from leading press and experts. They also have three small wine hotels among their vineyards, making them one of the unmissable places to visit in the Douro Valley
