Meet James and Annie Millton - the godparents of New World biodynamics.

The Milltons established their winery on the banks of the Te Arai River in the wine growing region of Gisborne in 1984. Only two things matter to James and Annie: the quality of the wine and leaving the land in an improved state for future generations.

Focusing less on the classical New Zealand grape varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, Millton specialise in grapes such as Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Viognier. The wines are superb: elegant, balanced and usually with a wonderful touch of umami that we simply adore.

With a stripped-back approach in the cellar, everything depends on the quality of fruit grown in vineyards. For James, biodynamic viticulture is just common sense and makes for the best tasting wines. Wild flowers, bees, cows and vines co-exist in perfect harmony, each providing something for the other, and make us love Millton even more.

“To be a good biodynamic farmer one has to be a very, very good farmer”

James Millton
