Château Ste Michelle

Château Ste Michelle’s vineyards span across 1416ha in the Columbia Valley American Viticulture Area, each offering their own unique characteristics which shine through in their wines. With vines dating back to Repeal of Prohibition, this historic estate has taken the lead in firmly cementing Washington’s place on the world wine map.

Attracting winemakers across the world for their commitment to excellence and innovation, Château Ste Michelle has partnered with the likes of Marchese Piero Antinori and Ernst Loosen, to produce world-class wines.

Tucked behind The Cascade Mountains, Columbia Valley is protected from the rainy marine climate which hits the coastal towns of Washington state. This transforms the valley into a winemaking oasis, where the summer days are long, and temperatures sit comfortably in the mid 20s; autumn nights are cool, and annual rainfall rarely exceeds 6-8 inches. This offers perfect ripening conditions where grapes can develop intense aromas and complex flavours. Additionally, the low rainfall permits vineyard managers to control vine vigour through considered irrigation, while the dry summers and deep winters mean Phylloxera is not an issue. It is one of the few regions in the world where vines can be planted on their own rootstock, preserving varieties in their natural state for future generations.

The château is committed to sustainability, as they stand out as leaders of winemaking in America. Their conservation efforts have been recognised by the industry, becoming a Washington State certified EnviroStar business.  As recently as February 2023, both Cold Creek and Canoe Ridge Estate vineyards received sustainable WA certification – an industry certificate which proves a commitment to following best practises for Washington in sustainable viticulture. The award recognises both social and environmental indicators.

“After nearly 30 years of experience, I’m inspired to be bold and take chances. I have leaned into my knowledge and enjoy challenging convention. I want to create exciting wines for people to enjoy. ”

Katie Nelson, Vice President of winemaking
