Mitchelton Airstrip Marsanne 2006

Product code: 14MIT3B2006

This wine evokes balmy Indian summers and Moroccan spice markets. A myriad of aromas - honeysuckle, white musk, candied orange, apricot nectar and creamy nougat. The palate is an explosion of flavour - succulent honey dew melon, rich stone fruit, poached pear and hints of citrus, held together by a seamless acidity and subtle veneer of complex oak.

Production information

Producer: Mitchelton

Located in central Victoria, Mitchelton's first vines were planted in the early 1970s after Australian wine industry legend Colin Preece identified an old patch of grazing land known as Blackwood Park as having great winemaking potential. The Gouldburn River surrounds the vineyard on three sides, shaping the unique environment and climate of Mitchelton. Not only had the land never seen vines before, but the company's decision to focus on Rhone varietals - including whites like Marsanne and Viognier - was almost unheard of at the time. This innovation combined with excellent site selection has been Mitcheltons’ calling card ever since.

Production note

Marsanne was first planted on the estate in the early 1970’s, whilst both Rousanne and Viognier were established in the early nineties. The juice is cold settled and racked ahead of inoculation in barrel with selected yeasts. Some of the lime green yoghurty textured lees are retained at racking, adding complexity and depth to the final Airstrip blend. Marsanne and Roussanne are fermented and matured for nine months in 20% new French oak while the Viognier component is fermented in 4 year old barrels to promote purity of fruit expression. The final blend is a careful selection of individual barrels that ensures harmony of oak coupled with complexity and texture.
