Production information

Producer: Katnook Estate

Katnook is an aboriginal word meaning “Fat Land”, referring to the rich, red fertile soils known as “Terra Rossa”. Katnook Estate is one of the heroes of Coonawarra - a small, cool climate area in South Australia famed for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It took until 1980 and the arrival of Wayne Stehbens for the wines to be launched under the Katnook label. 31 vintages on, Wayne is still in charge and has built the winery up into one of Australia's most respected wineries, twice winning the Jimmy Watson trophy for best Aussie red.

Production note

The 2008 growing season conditions were excellent, generally dry conditions conferring low disease pressure. Average early summer temperatures were followed by an extended hot spell through early March, leading to rapid accumulation of colour and flavour. Shiraz wines produced in 2008 showed great intensity, rich ripe flavours and fine tannins. Oak Maturation: Approximately 50% of the wine matured in a combination of French and American oak for a period of approximately 9 months.
