Chateau du Caillau Cahors 2009

Product code: 1COU2B2009

There is a suspicion of new oak, a jumble of black fruits, cherry, cassis and blackberry, blueberry, a subtle smoky nuance and a fleeting suggestion of black truffle. And the perfume is only the opening salvo. The palate is rich and loaded with delicious fruit. It is round and tannic with superb balance and structure.

Production information

Producer: Chateau du Caillau

Philippe Bernede is a renaissance man whose interests include cooking, aviation and a few inventions. But winegrowing is his passion and it shows in the quality of his Malbec. The domaine has been in his family for generations and is planted with the traditional grape of Cahors: Cot (AKA Malbec). While some continue to make dark tannic wines - the Black Wines of Cahors - Philippe favours more a modern, fruit-forward style. If you think only Argentina can produce amazing Malbec, think again.

Production note

All the grapes are destalked and crushed before fermentation in stainless steel vats for 5 weeks on the skins, each grape variety being fermented separately. After second fermentation, 50% goes in oak barrels whilst the balance is aged in foudres. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered after a year in oak.
