A lot of German wine can seem quite confusing with lots of long names. “Dr Loosen” is the name of the winemaker, “Wehlener Sonnenuhr” is the name of the vineyard, “Riesling” is the grape variety and “Kabinett” tells you it’s made from quite ripe grapes. The wine has zippy peach and green apple flavours and is light and refreshing with some sweetness.

The Dr. Loosen estate, based in the Mosel, has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with these ungrafted vines, averaging around 60 years old, in some of Germany’s prime vineyard sites, he had the raw materials to create stunning, world class wines.
To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size, and focused solely on Riesling. Ernst went on to stop all chemical fertilization, preferring only the moderate use of organic fertilizers. While most importantly, turning to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum amount of handling and technological meddling.
