A lot of German wine can seem quite confusing unless you know what some of the words mean. “Dr Loosen” is the name of the winemaker, “Bernkasteler” is where it is made, “Riesling” is the grape variety and “Beerenauselese” tells you it’s made from super ripe, sweet grapes. It has sweet, ripe fruit flavours and honeyed delicate notes as well.

The Dr. Loosen estate, based in the Mosel, has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with these ungrafted vines, averaging around 60 years old, in some of Germany’s prime vineyard sites, he had the raw materials to create stunning, world class wines.
To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size, and focused solely on Riesling. Ernst went on to stop all chemical fertilization, preferring only the moderate use of organic fertilizers. While most importantly, turning to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum amount of handling and technological meddling.
