A wonderfully brooding wine with depths of darkness in both appearance and taste. A floral streak gives the wine some prettiness in what would otherwise be a fairly dark exercise. This promise of density gives way to a plumy richness on the palate.
Open fermentation, 5 day cold soak, allowed to warm up and ferment spontaneously with native vineyard yeasts. Young wine drawn off the skin and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

Made from a blend of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc grapes this wine is a soft, medium bodied wine. It has flavours and aromas of chocolate and plums.
A well-structured wine with supple, ripe tannins. Floral aromas lift the wine against the dark berry fruit and plumy richness on the palate.

Te Awa is a single estate situated in the Gimblet Gravels area of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand’s premium red wine producing area. Hotter than Bordeaux and with similar gravely soils to Graves, it is unsurprising that this region produces fine examples of Bordeaux blends with some exciting Chardonnay and Syrah to boot. If you didn’t think New Zealand could make red wines (that weren’t Pinot Noir) think again!
The full Maori name given to the site is Te Awa o Te Atua, which means 'River of God', a reference to the mysterious subterranean streams over which the vineyards are situated and from which the wines draw a lot of their character.
