Jean Baltenweck
Organic Alsace from Ribeauville
Jean Baltenweck is one of the key growers making up the Cave de Ribeauville. The principal difference between him and others though is his use of organic viticultural methods with no chemical treatments and low yields. Grapes come from 22.5 acres of 30 year old certified organically-farmed vineyard on clay and limestone soils around the town of Ribeauville.
As well as all the hard work in the vineyards, the effort in the cave has been matched with the recruitment of renowned Bordeaux consultant, Denis Dubordieu. ““In Ribeauville I was struck by the discovery of a superb vineyard, on a human scale, with very enthusiastic and professional grape growers. It’s hard to find as much motivation and competence per acre! It is really an exciting project… and must be managed like a Cru, a wine producing unit with the ambition of making great dry white wines.”

Organic Viticulture
Growing organic grapes can involve such activity as avoiding chemical fungicides or pesticides, using natural fertilisers, and encouraging biodiversity in the vineyard. To include the word ‘organic’ on the label, the grower must be certified by a recognised body.
