Estapor Venir
A brilliant wine from Mexico’s No. 1 winemaker
Estapor Venir is produced using sustainable viticulture in the Guadalupe Valley in Baja California, Mexico. Winemaker Hugo d'Acosta favours Zinfandel and Grenache which are particularly well adapted to the climate and need little intervention. With minimal use of chemicals and only natural fertilisers, the vines are encouraged to form long roots and in some vineyards no irrigation is needed at all.
Built on the site of a former olive oil production plant Hugo and his brother Alejandro have tried to set an example by recycling; making extensive use of old bed and box springs, barrels, wine bottles, vineyard poles, irrigation hoses and plastic bottles they have turned these into an art form. Old plastic bottles are heated and pressed into layers to use as insulation in the walls and ceilings of new buildings. In time there are plans to make use of solar energy.

Teaching the next generation
Estapor Venir is not just about sustainable viticulture but ethical initiatives too. At the "Escuelita" winery, where the Estapor is produced, a non-profit making winemaking school has been set up to promote and educate local people about winemaking.
