Domaine Jean Thomas

Sancerre from the world famous Silex soils

The town of Sancerre sits on a big fault block of cretaceous limestone overlooking the Loire Valley. Jean and Ginette Thomas own 12 hectares spread over six villages, giving them lots of different flavour components to play with when they come to blending.

Their various plots are all based on the Silex soils, famous for being the best in Sancerre. The vines average 18 years of age and are planted at a high density (7000 vines per hectare) meaning that they have to work a bit harder. The roots go deeper searching for water and pick up the nutrients that give these wines a wonderful flinty, mineral character.
