Coopers Australian Ales
Handmade by the Cooper Family
The beer’s reputation spread and Coopers ales are now known the world over. Today, Coopers produce a wide range of beers and have a leading DIY brew kit range, but it is the Sparkling Ale and Pale Ale that they are best known for.
In 1862, the brewery’s founder Thomas Cooper, a Yorkshire emigrate, brewed a restorative beverage for his ailing wife. This brew quickly became popular so he opened a small brewery close to Adelaide in South Australia. The beer’s reputation spread and Coopers ales are now known the world over. Today, Coopers produce a wide range of beers and have a leading DIY brew kit range, but it is the Sparkling Ale and Pale Ale that they are best known for.
They remain a fiercely independent family brewer, currently in their 5th & 6th generation and are the only major Australian brewery still owned by Australians, with their quality roots maintained to this day
- Ales are still produced using the original recipe, using the traditional Burton-upon-Trent top fermentation method, and a unique yeast strain that is nearly 100 years old.
- Unusual cloudy ales due to the addition of a small amount of extra yeast and sugar during the bottling to create secondary bottle fermentation. The trademark roll or turn of the bottle can be seen the world over to stir the lees into the beer before serving.
- Only using natural ingredients, there are no artificial additives or preservatives. The Hops (‘Pride of Ringwood’ from Tasmania) and the Malt (malting grade, 2-row barley from the Yoke Peninsula in S. Australia) are some of the best. The same ingredients are used for both brews, with the ratios and primary fermentation time carefully adjusted for the two highly distinctive Ales.
- Strong ‘Green’ credentials supporting modern consumer attitudes. New, environmentally friendly brewery in Adelaide, South Australia has energy recovery systems, acquifer water systems, a plant that generates electricity for sale back to the Grid and a ‘wetlands recovery’ project.
- The Beer the Wine Trade Chooses! A certain Dr Penfold was one of the breweries earliest customers shortly after 1862. More recently a number of well known Australian winemakers, signed an endorsement to the great taste of Coopers
Product Information
Sparkling AleThe ale by which all others should be measured. With its famous cloudy sediment and its distinctive balance of malt, hops and fruity characters, the old ‘Red Label’ is a tasty slice of Coopers history. Little has changed since Thomas Cooper produced his first batch of Coopers Sparkling Ale in 1862. It is still brewed naturally using the century old top fermentation method.
At 5.8% for the discerning palate, it has a robust flavor of malt, hops and fruity character and a pronounced bitterness (35 IBU). It is particularly noted for food matches, such as BBQ red meats, stews, Chinese, curries and cheese.
Pale Ale
Guaranteed to turn heads, this is the beer that inspired a new generation of ale drinkers. With its fruity and floral characters, balanced with a crisp bitterness, Coopers Pale Ale has a compelling flavour which is perfect for every occasion. Naturally fermented in the “Burton-upon-Trent” style, a secondary fermentation creates the trademark sediment that gives ‘Pale’ its fine cloudy appearance.
Easy drinking, refreshing and a reduced alcohol at 4.5%, it has less bitterness than many other pale ales (24 IBU). With fruity and floral esters it is good with sushi, white fish, chicken or turkey, green salad and Thai food.
