Tasting Notes
Blends classic Rhone varietals - marsanne, roussanne and viognier - together in a medley of vibrant fruit flavours. Selected as one of the 1001 Wines to Drink Before You Die (2008).
Green gold in colour, this wine evokes fantasies of
balmy Indian summers and Moroccan spice markets.
A myriad of aromas - honeysuckle, white musk,
candied orange, apricot nectar and creamy nougat.
The palate is an explosion of taste sensations and
textures - succulent honey dew melon, rich stone
fruit, poached pear and hints of citrus, held together
by a seamless acidity and subtle veneer of complex
oak.
Vinification Details.
Careful monitoring of fruit ripening ensures
harvesting occurs at optimum maturity. The juice is
cold settled, racked and warmed before inoculation
with selected yeasts. Some of the lime green yoghurty textured juice lees is retained when racking the juice, adding complexity to the final Airstrip blend.
Marsanne and Roussanne are barrel fermented in
20% new French oak while the Viognier is barrel
fermented in 4 year old French barrels to retain
purity of fruit expression. All barrel fermented wines
are individually barrel selected to ensure the harmony of oak and texture in the final blend.
Producer Information
Located in central Victoria, Mitchelton's first vines were planted in the early 1970s after Australian wine industry legend Colin Preece identified an old patch of grazing land known as Blackwood Park as having great winemaking potential. Not only had the land never seen vines before but the company's decision to focus on Rhone varietals - including whites like Marsanne and Viognier - was almost unheard of at the time. This pioneering spirit continues to this day with new winemaker Ben Haines at the controls.
Regional info.
The impressive Mitchelton complex by the Goulburn River (90 minutes north of Melbourne) is in some of Victoria's most historic vineyard country. They are an icon of the Australian wine industry, and have won copious awards since its foundation in 1969.
Mitchelton's rich heritage of Shiraz and selected Rhone varieties (both those traditional to the Goulburn Valley, like Marsanne and Shiraz, and the less familiar like Roussanne, Viognier and Mourvedre) over three decades has affirmed Mitchelton's position as the leader of the region of Central Victoria and as one of Australia's most experienced wineries in the blending of these varieties. Mitchelton's objective is to produce wines from high quality fruit that are fresh and bright with clearly defined varietal and regional flavours.
Combining years of hands-on experience and an intimate understanding of the estate, the Mitchelton philosophy is to harness the vineyard's potential by unlocking the best from individual blocks through innovation and attention to detail in the vineyard and the winery.
Coupled with judicious use of innovative winemaking techniques, this approach gives shape and definition to the expressive qualities of the Mitchelton vineyard, creating wines of distinct personality, finesse and longevity.
The wine is named after a vine block on the estate which was once a landing area for light aircraft. Airstrip is a well structured wine which balances the unique qualities of the individual varieties.
