Tasting Notes for Katnook Estate Prodigy 2003 75cl:

A huge, silky, powerful wine. Deep black fruit flavours are silkily interwoven with notes of spice and vanilla. The finish is incredibly long and deliciously smooth. This is a wine to drink now or enjoy for many years to come.

Producer Information:

Katnook Estate is one of the heroes of Coonawarra - a small, cool climate area in South Australia famed for its exceptional Cabernet and Merlot. The name Katnook is taken from a local Aboriginal word meaning 'fat land' and vines have been planted on the site since the 19th Century. It took until 1980, however, and the arrival of Wayne Stehbens for the wines to be launched under the Katnook label. 27 vintages on, Wayne is still in charge and has built the winery up into one of Australia's most respected, twice winning the Jimmy Watson trophy for best Aussie red. As well as the Bordeaux grapes, Wayne is a master of white wine too and the Sauvignon Blancs are particularly good with a dry, zesty, minerally style quite unique in Oz.

Classification Apellation

Coonawarra

Regional Info

The 2003 Coonawarra season saw just below average temperatures and was generally mild and dry with yields being disappointingly low, however quality is very good. The combination of very low yields with a mild and dry ripening period has produced wines rich in varietal fruit flavours with soft tannins. Prodigy is made from grapes harvested off a small vineyard site that has consistently produced fruit of outstanding depth of fruit flavour and colour.

Vinification Details

50% new American oak, 50% new French oak for 24 months has added subtle oak and maturation flavours with soft lingering tannins.
