New Deakin Estate Viognier is a winner - 09/06/2009
Australia's Deakin Estate, in Mildura, North West Victoria, has released a Viognier to join its range of 100% estate grown varietal wines. It has already scooped Gold medals in Australia (one at the 2008 Perth Royal Show and another at the 2009 Macquarie Bank Sydney Royal Show).
The wine is now available in the UK at an RRSP of £7.99 (or online here for £39.88/6-pack) and at this kind of price, it is well nigh impossible to find Viognier of this quality.
A notoriously tricky grape variety to handle, winemaker Dr. Phil Spillman explains why he's devoted his energies to producing Deakin Estate Viognier,
"Viognier makes a cracker of a wine as a single variety - perfumed and intriguing. At Deakin Estate, we make Viognier just like we would a Riesling - no oak and a cool fermentation to capture freshness. After a few years experimenting, this is how I think our style shines."
An intensely fruity, fresh style with luscious aromas and flavours of lime, pineapple and quince, this is the wine for summer drinking, chilled on its own or with fragrant Thai and Chinese cuisine.
