Germany 2007 - 03/07/2008
2007 is another great German vintage - their good fortune with autumn weather seems to only be matched by their luck in penalty shoot-outs. Riesling lovers should be rubbing their hands together because 2007 is a return to more 'classic' vintage conditions. The hot years of 2005 and 2006, which produced uber-ripe wines, have been followed by a long, cool vintage that has produced wines with fantastic terroir expression and exceptional purity of fruit.
The outstanding feature of the vintage was the unprecedented length of the growing season. A warm Spring meant flowering got off to a fast start and the cool Summer meant the grapes weren't rushed to ripeness. This extra 'hang-time' has produced grapes that are ripe and healthy with complex flavours. Furthermore the lack of any excessive heat has ensured high acidity levels. Fruit, acidity, minerality, freshness: the 2007s have the complete set.
