Cheval Blanc & Yquem tasting with Pierre Lurton

Date: 2 June 2008

Price: £200

Venue: Landsdowne Club, 9, Fitzmaurice Place, London. W1J 5JD

We still have a few places left for our Chateaux Cheval Blanc and d'Yquem tasting with Pierre Lurton in London on Monday, June 2nd. The line-up of wines includes two fascinating comparisons: between Cheval Blanc 1989 and 1990, and d'Yquem 1990 and 2001.

Cheval Blanc 1989 was given 19/20 by Jancis Robinson last year when she described it as having "...masses of pleasure". Robert Parker prefers the 1990 noting that he is "...increasingly convinced that this is the most profound Cheval Blanc since the legendary 1982. 98pts"

Yquem 2001 can lay claim to be one of the 'perfect' sweet wines, with Robert Parker awarding it the magic 100pts. The 1990 is not far behind, receiving a score of 99pts from Parker who described it as "An awesome Yquem!". In addition to the exciting head-to-heads, we will also taste Yquem's rare dry white, Y de Yquem 2005 and other examples of the two Grand Vins. It should be a fantastic evening.

The Tasting Line-Up in Full:

  • Y de Yquem 2005
  • Petit Cheval 2005
  • Cheval Blanc 2004
  • Cheval Blanc 1990
  • Cheval Blanc 1989
  • d'Yquem 2001
  • d'Yquem 1999
  • d'Yquem 1990

A bit about Pierre Lurton

After obtaining his agricultural baccalaureat degree, Pierre Lurton studied medicine for two years. At the age of 23, he took over management of Clos Fourtet, a Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe belonging to the Lurton family.

At the age of 34, Pierre Lurton was appointed Managing Director of Chateau Cheval Blanc, a Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe A belonging at the time to the Fourcault-Laussac family.

In 1998, Bernard Arnault and Albert Frere acquired Château Cheval Blanc and named him manager.

On May 18th 2004, Pierre Lurton was appointed President of Chateau d'Yquem, a Premier Cru Superieur in the 1855 classification, by Bernard Arnault and the LVMH group.

He now is not only President of Cheval Blanc and Yquem, but also Cheval des Andes in Argentina, a joint venture between Bodega de Chandon, belonging to the LVMH group's Chandon vineyards, and Cheval Blanc.
