Wynns: The Estate that Made Coonawarra Famous

Vineyard

Wynn Family Woodcut

In 1861, John Riddoch moved to the area that would become Coonawarra and set into motion events that would change the face of Australian winemaking. What began as an 800-hectare 'fruit colony' to provide wine for the domestic market, gradually, through a series of near busts and booms, became the first winery to produce and market wines in ways we take for granted today.

The Wynn family continued this pioneering spirit when they took over Riddoch's estate in the 50s. They were the first people to use the word 'estate' on the label to indicate where the wine in the bottle came from. They also commissioned a woodcut of the winery by a local artist that has become the iconic label known across Australia. Today, the winery is the largest grower in the entire Coonawarra district and under the guidance of Senior Winemaker, Sue Hodder, the estate has moved from strength to strength, garnering a near fanatical following along the way.

Wynns and Bibendum

Bibendum’s Buying Manager for the New World, Matt Smith, said: “Wynns is a perfect fit for Bibendum, an iconic, quality-focused producer with a range of wines that work across a variety of channels. We already work very closely with Treasury Wine Estates on Penfolds and when the opportunity to partner with Wynns came up, we jumped at the chance.”

Dan Townsend, Treasury Wine Estates’s General Manager for the UK, Ireland and Western Europe said: “This is fantastic news for Wynns. We were determined to take the brand to a distributor that recognised not only the quality and heritage of Wynns but also had an unparalleled network and capability as well as a fantastic passion for the world of wine. Bibendum was the obvious choice and we’re delighted Wynns will be part of Bibendum’s offering and made available to their hugely impressive customer base.”
