The Wonderful World of Morgassi

Morgassi VineyardsMarina Piacitelli with Bibendum's Stuart Grundy and Michael Saunders

One of the leading estates in Piemonte, the Morgassi Superiore winery, was created by Marino Piacitelli in 1993 and produces excellent wines from cortese and timorasso grapes grown in the terroir of Piemonte’s finest vineyards. Produced in limited quantities, Morgassi wines are some of the finest Gavis found anywhere in the region.

A small estate of 50 hectares, the winery is now managed by sisters Marina and Cecilia Piacitelli. Following in their father’s footsteps, they have risen to the challenge of growing the winery through a combination of time-honoured tradition and innovative technology, along with a tireless commitment to quality. All the vines here are grown on calcareous clays and shales which contribute to the wines’ amazing minerality and freshness.

Unusually for the region, they release the wines following a year in bottle, which delivers a wine that is rich and elegant on release and gives the Morgassi wines their fantastic ageing potential. In addition to the Gavi di Gavi and the Gavi di Gavi Superiore, we are also listing their timorasso. This is one of the hottest grape varieties in Italy at the moment and is only produced in tiny quantities. With ageing potential of 10-15 years, this is a really exciting style of white wine from Northern Italy.
