Waldo Van Zyl introduces Sijnn Wines, South Africa

Sijnn

Sijnn Wines is a collaboration between winemaker Waldo Van Zyl, David Trafford and Bibendum’s Simon Farr.

When Waldo visited Bibendum I asked him how David Trafford chose the vineyard site in this remote region of South Africa.

The vineyard is situated 2.5 hours drive east of Cape Town with no other vineyards within a 40 km radius, the closest being those inland around Swellendam and along the coast at Elim. Although it is very hot, Waldo explained how the vineyard benefits from being only 15kms from the ocean, the fresh ocean winds cool down what would otherwise be a very hot site.

We tasted the 2008 Sijnn Red, which is a blend of Shiraz, Mourvedre, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira. Waldo explains the remote site inspired David Trafford to experiment with Portuguese grapes alongside the classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape varieties.

The red wine is a very refined, versatile wine. It can work equally well with barbecued food or with softer, more subtle flavours.
