What the Team are Drinking

We're a company of wine lovers at Bibendum.

No matter who you speak to, there's always an inspiring wine-related story. So whether it's discovering something new or revisiting old favourites, the festive period is the time to dig out the corkscrew and get tasting. Here are five Bibendumites with what they'll be drinking this Christmas. Speak to your account manager if you'd like to list any of the wines seen here.

Sijnn Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed the De Trafford wines from Stellenbosch (I visited the estate in 2009). Sijnn is David’s project in the Malagas Ward. I love South African Cabernet Sauvignon and I will be cracking open the 2009 Sijnn over the Christmas holidays. Looking forward to the heady combination of herbs, spicy toasty oak and tobacco flavours. Merry Christmas!

Palmer & Co. Blanc de Blancs 2008

Who says Chardonnay is boring?! Certainly not in this case! I will be enjoying a glass or two of this on Christmas morning with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon... tiny bubbles, fine mousse and lovely nutty aromas. World class Blanc de Blancs for a fraction of the usual price.

Wynns Black Label Shiraz 2010

Chosen for nostalgic reasons in some ways, I first visited Wynns in 1987, before they had even planted Shiraz. I reckon that considering I am cooking a fore-rib from McNaughtons Farmer Butcher in Bannockburn for Christmas Day, this should do the job beautifully. This wholesome Shiraz has bags of fruit with enough freshness to work with my speciality PX and lime gravy.  A class act.

Quintarelli Valpolicella and Bollinger Grande Annee 2004

I’ll be settling down to a massive rump of beef this Christmas, so it would be a crime to drink anything other than Quintarelli Valpolicella with it. I couldn’t decide on just one wine to drink and as it’s Christmas, I thought I’d push the boat out for some Bollinger Grande Annee. I love how yeasty and toasty it is and how those notes give it such elegance. Cheers!

Domaine Lafage Cuvee Centenaire 2013

From seaside sites a field blend of mainly 100-year-old Grenache Blanc (hence “Centenaire”) and some Grenache Gris with a little Macabeu and Roussanne, matured in old barriques with a small portion fermented in 600-litre barrels, this wine represents the product of up to three separate hand-pickings at different levels of potential alcohol, the smallest often truly vendange tardive. I love it! For versatility and value this is my white wine of the year – and every year.

Chateau de St Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2013 magnum

Bigger always means better, especially at Christmas. Magnums look great on the table and as we’ll be having the extended family round this year, hopefully the wine should last a bit longer! I honestly think Saint Cosme is one of the most reliable producers in our portfolio, never mind the Rhone, now just to make sure the bottles don’t “accidentally” get opened before the big day.

Lirac Clos de Sixte Domaine Grand Veneur 2011

A mini-Chateauneuf du Pape from a top domaine. Intense colour, bags of fruit, loads of spice and sufficient alcohol to help take the edge off the out of tune carol singers outside. It works brilliantly with everything from beef to cheese, but it best paired with chipolatas wrapped in bacon, by far the best bit of Christmas dinner.
