Spreading the wine word

Wine wordThe importance of training

Wine can easily seem complicated and intimidating, but it doesn’t need to be. Effective training will enable staff to confidently engage customers and provide excellent service, while encouraging more premium  product sales. Bibendum’s bespoke Train the Trainer workshops offer a great solution to better equip managers and supervisors, while spreading the wine word even further.

Building on our Wine Foundation course – a fun and interactive one day workshop covering the basics of wine – Train the Trainer is the next step in wine education. It is ideal for those individuals with a good wine knowledge, who will be responsible for training their colleagues. It can be taken as a stand-alone course, or combined with the Wine Foundation course.

Train the Trainer gets the most take-up as a bespoke course tailored to a customer’s specific needs. Domenico Vinci, restaurant and bar manager at Radisson Blu, explains that since attending Train the Trainer, they have run a few mini sessions on wine, which in turn has led to increased sales.

“The team feel a lot more confident on advising and upselling wine, while sales have simultaneously increased, especially at the bar. We are now also in the process of matching wines to dishes during our menu tastings and we have added a ‘special of the day’ board featuring a selected wine, which is again triggering more sales,” he says.

They run about two sessions per month, with the aim of identifying easy words for staff to describe the different wines, helping them to naturally talk about wine. He explains, “This type of format works really well and can be successfully implemented anywhere – you will engage your staff, without sessions becoming long and boring.”
