Vintage update 2014: Spain

Overall Spain has had another decent vintage, a good crop with moderate alcohol. However it was very difficult in Rioja with lots of fungal disease. This second short vintage in a row will cause increases in pricing. We’re looking forward to the lighter, fresher whites from Catalunya and Rueda.

Galicia – continues to be the cutting edge region, especially Ribeira Sacra, with lots of UK press coverage about the region.

Rioja - Not the best years. Plenty of rain at inopportune times meant initial reports aren’t too positive. Yields are down and prices could rise but we’ve yet to see anything that would suggest the public are losing the taste for it.

Spain Central – The reliable regions of La Mancha, Valencia and Carinena pulled through again. Some growers struggled with sugar and potential alcohol levels, but for the most part it looks good for these parts of Spain.

Indigenous grapes are increasing in popularity. This is driven by consumer desire for provenance and authenticity as well as real value for money. Both Bobal and Godello are gaining real traction in the UK.
