New British Bubbles – Coates & Seely

Coates & SeelyWe’re really excited to have Coates & Seely on board, producing mouth-watering English sparkling Brut and Rosé wines.

Situated in the chalk-rich Wooldings vineyard in the North Hampshire Downs, Coates & Seely enjoys virtually identical soil, geology and a similar climate to the Champagne region, whose chalk hills lie just 80 miles south of the chalk downlands of southern England. The vineyard sprawls over both sides of a well-sheltered, V-shaped valley, which provides perfect growing conditions for superior Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

With an all-French winemaking team including consultants from Champagne, the aim has always been to combine first-rate French craftsmanship with the best of English terroir. They have even trademarked the term ‘Methode Britannique’ as a playful nod to ‘Methode Champenoise’ and an attempt to popularise the, currently unofficial, designation for English sparkling wine – ‘Britagne’.

Alongside traditional winemaking techniques and careful hand-harvesting, Coates & Seely also employs innovative modern practices such as the use of concrete eggs in the winemaking process. This English wine producer is jointly owned by two old friends, Nicholas Coates and Christian Seely, whose combined names draw on the Champenois tradition of naming wines after the founders, rather than a location, which is common among other English producers.
