Cocktail Recipe: Hot Buttered Rum by Trailer Happiness

Hot Buttered Rum

A great winter drink, the Hot Buttered Rum takes its inspiration from the Tiki drinks which took off in the 50s and 60s.

The inspiration for the cocktail and the drinks menu at Trailer Happiness, goes way back to the 1930s at Don the Beachcomber’s in Hollywood and the original Trader Vic’s in Oakland, California, two of the founding fathers of the Tiki bar and these elaborate, rum-based, Polynesian style drinks. it uses our Plantation 5 year old Rum and Pierre Ferrand Orange Curacao to delicious effect.

So in celebration of this golden era in cocktails and the forthcoming winter months, here is the recipe straight from Notting Hill’s Trailer Happiness.

Trailer Happiness Hot Buttered Rum

Ingredients:

40ml The Real McCoy 5yo Rum
10ml Pierre Ferrand Orange Curacao
1 inch Spiced Butter**
2 slices of Orange
Hot Water

Method

Place first four ingredients into a suitable vessel (a nice big mug works just fine!) give a good mix and continue to stir as you add boiling water to ensure the butter is thoroughly mixed through. Garnish with orange slices.

**Spiced Butter: Take 500 grams of good quality un-salted butter, leave it out of the fridge until it is at room temperature. In a bowl, mix the zest of 2 large oranges and 1 large lemon, 1/2 a grated nutmeg, a healthy pinch of cinnamon powder, 4 or 5 cloves and 1 star anise.

Mix all of this in to the butter, re shape into a log of about 1inch diameter and set in greaseproof paper in the fridge. When you are making the drink cut an inch of butter per drink (or more if you feel adventurous!!)
