Eat, drink and be merry this Christmas

Christmas food and wine matchingChristmas songs are playing everywhere, the streets are alive with Christmas lights and you cannot venture outside without your gloves. The festive season is here, with all of its delicious dishes – but what should be on your wine list this year?

Take a look at our festive food and wine pairings for some inspiration:

Oysters, smoked salmon and prawns

There’s no better time to pop open a bottle of Champagne than Christmas time.

The Castellane Brut’s fresh acidity perfectly cuts through the oily fish, just like a squeeze of lemon.

Or try a Chablis from Domaine Jean Defaix, which offers a fantastic contrast to the richness.

Both wines are medium-bodied, so will perfectly match the weight of these dishes.

For something a bit different, try the Biecher Schaal Gewurztraminer from Alsace.

The perfect turkey wine will depend on your accompaniments.

If you opt for cranberry and redcurrant sauces, then match their sweetness with a young, fruity wine, like the Les Roches Beaujolais.

However, the more traditional sides of bread sauce and sausages wrapped in bacon (pigs in blankets) would suit the Chateau de Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone.

Or if you prefer a red, opt for something with less tannins and a bit of age, like this Castillo Clavijo Rioja Gran Reserva.

The classics of Christmas pudding and mince pies will both be delicious with aged Tawny Port, like the 30 year old Quinta do Vallado.

If a traditional sherry trifle is on the menu, serve it with a the decadent Bodegas Alvear Pedro Ximenez.

For a chocolate dessert, try the deliciously sweet Els Pyreneus Maury Grenat.
