Best’s Winery Old Vine Pinot Meunier (Great Western, Australia)

Best's Old Vine Pinot Meunier

Best’s Winery was founded in 1866 by the pioneering Henry Best. He planted his mix of rare and wonderful vines in the Grampians wine region of central Victoria just as the gold mining boom receded, creating more permanent jobs for the area's unemployed ‘diggers’.

The baton of responsibility was then bought by Henry’s neighbour, Frederick P Thomson, in 1920 and fourth generation winemaker Viv Thomson and his son Ben continue to create honest yet vivacious wines which have gained bucket loads of respect throughout the wine industry.

Best’s make a variety of interesting wines, including not one but two 100% Pinot Meunier wines, one Old Vine and one from younger vines. Pinot Meunier can be an elegant grape with enough class to be used to blend France’s finest fizz, Champagne, however it is rarely seen as a single varietal wine.

Best's Old Vine Pinot MeunierThe Mediterranean climate of the Grampians region paired with the moisture retaining clay based soils, results in extremely low yields of high quality grapes. The Pinot Meunier vines for this wine were planted way back in the 1860's, a vineyard reputed to house some of the world’s oldest Pinot Meunier vines.

Today, this uncommon varietal planting continues to be meticulously cared for with all grapes being lovingly handpicked and sorted before undergoing ageing in French oak.

So how does a 100% Old Vine Pinot Meunier taste? Brambley fruits and red raspberries are evident on the nose with a refreshing herbal addition.

The oak character is prominent delivering bundles of spice however the body reflects that of Pinot Noir and a good level of acidity means this wine will be a fantastic accompaniment to food.

Chic and stylish this wine will age wonderfully and is a great representation of what boutique Australian estates can produce.
