5 killer facts about Malbec

In celebration of Malbec’s journey from relative obscurity hidden in Bordeaux blends, to Argentine superstar here are five things you need to know about it.

1) According to our grape app Plonk, Malbec is the most popular red grape variety among Millennials – consumers born between the early 80s and 2000.

2) Malbec grapes have particularly thin skins. Originally grown throughout Bordeaux, a frost in 1956 wiped out around 75% of the crop. Growers abandoned it in favour of the hardier Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

3) There are over 25,000 hectares planted in Argentina. Lujan de Cuyo, a district of Mendoza, is its spiritual home but it’s found as far north as Salta and as far south as Patagonia. The higher the better as altitude means the grapes can ripen in the sun without developing the rustic tannins that are a sign of Cahors Malbec.

4) Catena was one of the first Argentine wineries to show the potential of Malbec as a single variety. Their Research and Development programme has yielded several high profile and high-scoring wines.

5) One of the most popular pairings is Malbec with steak. However, it also matches incredibly well with mushroom dishes. If you can taste the umami, it’ll be good with Malbec.
