Tweet me up Scotty
January 28th, 2009

It was a tasting like no other. It started with a man called Documentally zooming a tiny camera into the faces of tasters and finished with a man in Manchester taking his shirt off.

The one consistent feature was the wine. The group of bloggers and Twitterers in London joined others around the country in tasting Delicato Old Vine Zinfandel, Laurenz V Friendly Gruner Veltliner and Dinastia Vivanco Rioja Crianza. However, the cut and thrust of audible conversation was replaced by the tapping of keys and buttons on laptops, iphones and Blackberries.

Tasting notes, comments, questions, asides and twitpics were all posted to the TTL website as well as Twitter homepages, meaning that the tasting could be followed and even contrubuted to by an audience of thousands. It went something like this…

loudmouthman: #ttl seriously Dinastia is bloody gorgous. Like dating a super model and not wanting to tell your friends.
mackney: I now have more wine related tweeps following me than ever! #ttl
ZebraSun: #ttl I can report that 2 of us agree that “Sensations caramelised onion and balsamic chips” go well with the Delicato red.
ZebraSun: #ttl Seriously I think for me it is Delicato is fantastic. I will be after a case of that for sure.

And then it all started to get weird and…well…a bit wonderful. Dinastia Vivanco Rioja Crianza got compared to a Dinosaur. Much easier using the web and a picture for this than trying to explain it! See right…

rjbirkin: #ttl Dinastia: It’s like watching The Land Before Time after Jurassic Park.

sizemore: In case anyone was wondering what dinosaur wine tastes like… imagine this in your mouth: http://tinyurl.com/9m8r7f

Twitpics came in of all sorts of things. Bottles, labels, happy tasters and even a man about to take a gulp. This was all a bit too much for @hollowlegs who demanded more. More what? More chest hair was the answer from @bholden and @jonthebeef who duly obliged with a very cheeky twitpic.

bholden: #ttl @documentally @hollowlegs no sooner said than done! http://twitpic.com/15igj

Somwhere in amongst all this vinous fun, Twitter trends announced the good news…

binendswine: London #ttl is now trending #1!!! Not bad for a Wednesday morning! Beating: Inauguration, President Obama, #inaug09, Bush, VERY COOL! #ttl

Yes, Twitter Taste Live was the most talked about Twitter topic in the world…even bigger than Obama’s inauguration. That was pretty much the icing on the cake. What a brilliant way to educate and interact with wine enthusiasts and novices alike. In fact I think it was about the most fun I’ve ever had with my mouth closed!
