In the Vineyard and Winery
Our producers carry out a range of activities so that they can work sustainably and responsibly.
Here are some explanations of these practices. We have also flagged individual wines depending on these activities. Search our Vivid wines here.
Certified organic wines
Organic wines are made from organically grown grapes. Being organic means the vineyards cannot be treated with any type of chemical. The aim of the organic grape grower is to have healthy living soil both in the vineyard and the surrounding area. Organic wine is made with grapes grown using organic viticulture with no chemical intervention and has been certified by an accredited body.
Working towards organic certification
Organic certification is a lengthy process so we have highlighted wines that are working towards certification because they will not be using any chemical intervention.
Certified biodynamic wines
Biodynamic viticulture views the soil (and indeed the Earth) as a living entity, with daily and seasonal rhythms influenced by the positions of the moon, planets and stars. A holistic approach respects these forces and implements the use of special preparations instead of chemicals to enhance the growing conditions. This wine is certified by bodies such as Demeter.
Working towards biodynamic certification
Biodynamic certification involves a lengthy process beyond being organic, we have also highlighted these wines.
ISO 14001 certified
Like Bibendum several of our producers are ISO 14001 certified. This may sound a little dull but this series of international standards helps to create an environmental management system to guide and audit work in the winery as well as the vineyard.
Carbon neutral winery
Reducing carbon footprint is a key part of any environmental management system. However some producers have gone one step further by not only minimising their carbon footprint but also off setting any carbon they produce.
Lightweight glass
Around a fifth of Bibendum's wines are packaged in lightweight glass bottles weighing 356g or less – a saving of almost 25% of the glass used in an average bottle. Lighter glass means a cut in carbon emissions from both the manufacturing process and transportation. Read more about packaging wine.
Sustainable practices
Some of our producers do not undergo certification to be organic, biodynamic or ISO 14001 yet are still notable for their drive and enthusiasm when it comes to taking action to protect the environment and to promote sustainability.
